Wolverhampton Council closed its HQ with employees now working at home, or supporting vulnerable residents in the city.

The authority's customer service team is still contactable through online webforms, email and telephone.

Councillor Ian Brookfield, leader of the council, said: "Despite our desire to keep the civic centre open, the health and wellbeing of our residents and employees has to be our top priority during this current national and local emergency.

"Therefore, we have taken the decision to close the civic centre until further notice to keep people safe and out of hospital, so our fantastic NHS colleagues have a fighting chance of treating those most in need.

"I would urge city residents to do their bit and support their local doctors and nurses by, to put it bluntly, staying at home."

The civic centre car park has also been closed until further notice.

The council's customer service team is still contactable through email and online forms.

Steve Evans, cabinet member for city environment at Wolverhampton Council, said: "Our teams will be working hard across the council to put the people of Wolverhampton first.

"On behalf of the city council, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your co-operation and understanding and urge everyone to stay at home and be safe."

Payments to the council can still be made online with cash payments being temporarily suspended.
