Elias Mattu was Mayor of Wolverhampton until his death in 2018 with his wife Asha serving as Mayoress.

She was later elected to Wolverhampton Council to represent the Graiseley ward.

Mrs Mattu was joined by family, friends and colleagues of the former mayor and civic dignitaries including the current Mayor Claire Darke at the unveiling ceremony for Elias Mattu Avenue.

The road will lead to a new housing development in the ward Elias Mattu lived in and served for 20 years as councillor, something Asha said he would be proud of.

She said: "He would be so proud with this and to have this road right in the heart of Graiseley is just an honour and a privilege."

Both the Mayor and Asha gave speeches about Elias Mattu and his life and legacy before the ribbon was officially cut to reveal the road sign.

Following the ribbon cutting, those present were able to pose for photos with the sign and a picture of Elias.

Asha spoke about Elias' legacy in the community and expressed her thanks for everyone who came to the unveiling.

She said: "We've got the Elias Mattu Foundation, with which we're serving the community as he did, so we're continuing that in his name.

"I would like to say thank you very much to everyone who came today. It's very touching that everybody has taken time out and made an effort to come here.
