Police and hospital bosses have launched an investigation after it was alleged that Daisy Griffiths was hit around the head while in her hospital bed.

The 76-year-old was in hospital because of complications following a heart bypass.

Relatives claim she was hit around the head, unprovoked, with the fire extinguisher at 2.30am on Monday by a man staying on the next ward.

She was apparently left bruised, dazed and confused after the incident.

Both Walsall Manor Hospital and West Midlands Police are investigating but no arrests have been made.

Her sister, 68-year-old Mutella Ellison, said she received a phone call at 2.30am on Monday from a nurse who told her that a man from the male ward went over to the ladies ward with a fire extinguisher and hit her sister in her face.

Daisy, a mother-of-one, reportedly suffered bruising in the attack, and is still shaken up and confused.

Her sister said the attack was devastating to her family.

Daisy, from Walsall, had spent over two weeks in hospital because of complications following a heart bypass before the incident.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "Officers are liaising with staff at the Manor hospital and are going to speak to the victim when she is medically fit to do so, due to her pre-existing medical condition.

"No arrests have been made."

Karen Dunderdale, director of nursing at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, added: "The safety of patients in our care is our priority and we are supporting both the families involved while we fully investigate this incident.

"We will ensure we stay in touch with them throughout this process and share our findings."
