Road outside West Bromwich Wetherspoons cordoned off due to 'suspicious package'

A road in West Bromwich was cordoned off by a pub on Tuesday morning after an unattended package was left in the street.

St Michael's Street was closed off outside the Wetherspoon-run Billiard Hall pub and The Catholic Church of Saint Michael and the Holy Angels at around 9.30am.

A witness at the scene said: "There was a suspicious package. The area was taped off by police, but in the end it was just a plastic bottle with some sort of liquid."

West Midlands Police said in a statement: "We were called to Victoria Street, West Bromwich at around 9.30am today after an unattended package was discovered.

The area has been sealed off as a precaution and the Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team have been asked to attend."

Sandwell Police said on Twitter that officers were called to reported of an unattended package in West Bromwich.

"The area has been sealed off as a precaution and the Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team have been asked to attend," they said.

The cordon was lifted after police determined the suspicious item was not dangerous.
