The man, aged 27, was hit by a grey Audi A7 on the A4041 Newton Road near West Bromwich shortly before 9.30pm last night.

Off-duty nurses carried out CPR on the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene near the junction of Wigmore Lane and Sandwell Valley Crematorium.

The man's next of kin have been informed.

The car driver stopped at the scene and is said to be helping officers with their investigation, West Midlands Police said.

Detective Constable Jamie Simon, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "We are currently reviewing CCTV and our enquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of this collision which sadly resulted in a man losing his life.

“We want to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or anyone with dashcam footage who hasn’t yet got in touch.”

Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and a MERIT trauma team were sent to the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "On arrival ambulance staff found off-duty nurses performing CPR on a pedestrian, a man, who had reportedly been involved in a collision with a car.

"Ambulance staff took over resuscitation efforts, administering advanced life support, but sadly nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead on scene a short time later.”
