James Reade was rushed to hospital in a critical condition after being injured in the crash on Castle Street, near Fisher Street, at around 3.45pm last Thursday.

He died in hospital on Sunday.

Mr Reade, 64, was identified as the victim today as officers appealed for witnesses to the crash to contact them.

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from West Midland Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "I am asking anyone with information to contact us urgently.

“We are continuing to review CCTV footage and asking anyone who saw what happened to speak to us as it could prove to be vital for our investigation.”

Paramedics were at the scene for around 90 minutes and witnesses said the National Express bus involved stayed on Castle Street until the medical teams left.

An air ambulance was sent to the town centre but Mr Reade was taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital by land ambulance.

Castle Street, Tower Street and New Street were all shut to vehicles for several hours as police investigated the crash.

Police tape was also blocking the junction of Castle Street and Fisher Street to pedestrians.

Anyone with information can contact West Midlands Police on 101, quoting log number 1722 of January 30.
