Mohammed Hussain, aged 28 and of no fixed address, stabbed a man so hard he broke his arm during a raid at the home home of a young family last November.

Hussain and a group of accomplices forced their way into the house in the Acocks Green area of Birmingham and demanded jewellery and money from a couple who were woken up by the noise.

The man passed out after being stabbed in the arm and slashed in the neckwhile his wife fended off the armed robbers after they broke in at around 3.30am.

Hussain had covered his face using an old t-shirt but during the chaos, the t-shirt slipped and his face was revealed to the woman. She was instantly able to recognise him as someone she had come across before.

The armed men eventually fled the scene with the couple's Volkswagen Passat car and a police investigation was launched to trace the attackers.

The stolen car was found four-and-a-half miles away near Cannon Hill Park a few days later and after the woman provided information on the main attacker, they were able to begin tracking him down.

Three days after the robbery, Hussain was found staying at a friend's house and a search revealed the key to the stolen car as well as weapons and the matching glove that had been left at the scene.

Hussain was charged with two counts of robbery and wounding and was jailed at Birmingham Crown Court last week.

Pc Rebecca Woodcock, from West Midlands Police's Force CID team, said: "Although nothing will change the traumatic experience a husband and wife went through when a group of armed men burst into their home, I hope the sentence Hussain has received can issue some comfort, knowing the person who hurt them, has been put behind bars for a substantial amount of time."

Enquiries continue to trace the other offenders involved. Anyone with information can call West Midlands Police on 101, quoting 20BE/276618K/19.
