Further five coronavirus deaths across Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire

A further five coronavirus deaths have been confirmed across the Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire.

The deaths announced today mean 7,440 people have died with the virus in the region's hospitals.

Three deaths were confirmed at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Queen Elizabeth Hospital as well as Heartlands, Solihull and Good Hope hospitals, taking the death toll there to 2,558.

One death was recorded at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, where the death toll at New Cross Hospital is now 789.

And one death was confirmed at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, which runs the main hospitals in Stafford and Stoke, where the total increased to 1,359.

No new deaths were confirmed at the Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, where 1,148 people have now died with Covid.

No new deaths were announced at the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, meaning 712 Covid patients have now died at Walsall Manor Hospital, along with the Dudley Group NHS Trust where the death toll stands at 715.

A spokesman for NHS England said: "A further 49 people, who tested positive for the coronavirus have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 85,234.

"Patients were aged between 50 and 93 years old. All except three (aged 62 to 89 years old) had known underlying health conditions."
