New coronavirus death confirmed in Birmingham

One new coronavirus death has been confirmed at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust.

The death at the trust, which runs Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull hospitals, happened on Tuesday but was announced today.

No other deaths were reported in the Black Country or Staffordshire today, the latest figures have shown.

It means a total of 2,561 people have now died with coronavirus in hospitals across the region – with a further 696 having died in the region's care homes.

Nationally, the death toll in England by eight to 29,452 with the UK-wide figure yet to be announced.

Yesterday the UK toll, which includes deaths in and out of hospital, stood at 41,347 after more than 5,000 deaths were removed from the total after a review from the Government.

Now the figures only include the number of deaths that occurred within 28 days of a positive test.

A spokesman said: "A further eight people, who tested positive for the coronavirus (Covid-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 29,452.

"Patients were aged between 75 and 90 years old. All had known underlying health conditions. Their families have been informed."

The death toll at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, the largest trust in the region, now stands at 972.

A total of 287 have died at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, which runs New Cross and Cannock Chase hospitals,.

The death toll at the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Russells Hall Hospital, remains at 264; while the toll at the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs Walsall Manor Hospital, stands at 230.

A total of 382 people have died at the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs Sandwell General and City hospital, while 355 people have died at the University Hospitals of North Midlands Trust, which runs County Hospital in Stafford and Royal Stoke University Hospital.
