Coronavirus death toll passes 3,000 in Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire

More than 3,000 people have now died from coronavirus in the Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire.

A further 13 coronavirus patients were confirmed to have died in the region's hospitals in figures released on Tuesday, taking the total to 2,437.

Meanwhile the number of Covid-19 deaths in the region's care homes increased by 17 to 569 in the weekly figures released by the Office for National Statistics.

It means the total number of people who have died from the virus in the Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire now stands at 3,006.

The UK-wide death toll released by the Government, which includes deaths in and out of hospital, will be announced later today.

Monday's figures showed 40,597 people have died although analysis of ONS and NHS figures suggests the full toll is around 50,000.

It comes as data from the ONS shows the West Midlands recorded its lowest weekly number of coronavirus deaths since lockdown began in the last week of May.

Regional breakdown

The number of deaths in hospitals in England went up by 129 to 27,619, in figures announced on Tuesday.

Of the new deaths, six were at the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs Sandwell General and City hospitals, taking the total to 366.

Three deaths were confirmed at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, which runs Stafford's County Hospital and Royal Stoke University Hospital, where the total is now 318.

A further two deaths were recorded at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, which runs New Cross and Cannock Chase hospitals, taking the total to 279.

No new deaths were recorded at the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Russells Hall Hospital, where the total is 255, or at the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, in charge of the Manor Hospital, where the total remains 218.

A further two deaths were confirmed at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust, taking the total to 932. The trust runs Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull hospitals.

Three new deaths were reported in Worcestershire, where the total death toll in the county's hospitals increased to 293.

A spokesman for NHS England said: "A further 129 people, who tested positive for coronavirus (Covid-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 27,619.

"Patients were aged between 26 and 100 years old. Three patients – aged between 78 and 93 years old – had no known underlying health conditions.

"Their families have been informed."

The daily hospital figures include Covid-19 patients whose deaths were confirmed in the previous 24 hours, not who died in that period.
