Upper Crust Cafe, in Wolverhampton, is delivering food to NHS workers at a road-side test centre for coronavirus.

The cafe, on Dudley Road, is also offering free hot drinks to police officers and paramedics.

Kyle Smith, 24, from Wednesfield, who runs the cafe, said: "They [key workers] are offering us such an essential service.

"They rely on us to stay open so they can get something to eat and drink. We are grateful for what they are doing."

Upper Crust Cafe is providing food for NHS workers at Stafford Road, in Wolverhampton, five days a week.

The site, near KFC, is swab-testing NHS workers and frontline health and social care workers for Covid-19.

Mr Smith has run the cafe since 2018 and employs four other staff members.

Since the outbreak of Covid-19, the cafe has switched to a takeaway license to continue operating.

This was required by all cafes, pubs and restaurants after they were forced to shut down to prevent coronavirus spreading.

Vulnerable

Among the cafe's customers are nurses that work at hospitals and care homes. Deliveries are run through Uber Eats and drivers have been heading to those locations.

Kyle continued: "We noticed that there was vulnerable people in the community through no fault of their own.

"They needed food cooking for them. We decided to continue running the cafe."

He continued: "The NHS contacted us. They wanted us to deliver food for the staff at Stafford Road.

"We have also extended our gratitude to blue light workers.

"We are offering free hot drinks to blue light workers and an additional 25 per cent off food and other drinks."
