Nine crews were sent to the fire at Thompson Friction Welding just before 9pm yesterday.

Crews from Oldbury, Smethwick and Cradley Heath were among those who attended the scene and firefighters were today still at the site damping down and carrying out investigations into the cause of the blaze.

No-one was injured but about about 25 per cent of the building, off Hereward Rise, was badly damaged.

Watch commander Lee Sketchley, from Smethwick fire station, said no machinery was affected but a lot of the firm's paperwork was destroyed.
