Holding close a cherished photograph of the young plasterer, the trio comforted each other as the emotions of the occasion became too much to bear. Simon, an avid motorcross rider from Needwood Drive in Lanesfield, doted on his six-year-old daughter Shannon. He died on August 27 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, just hours after the attack.
A 17-year-old from Stourbridge, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with manslaughter but the Crown Prosecution Service was forced to drop the case due to lack of evidence, leaving his family heartbroken.
They said the case was the only thing that had kept them going since Simon died and told how they felt "let down" that justice had not been done. Yesterday friends and relatives also handed out leaflets appealing to anyone with information to go to police.
Cath described him as a "wonderful" husband who lived life to the full. "I can't believe it has been a year. It still feels like yesterday.
"Every day is still so hard without him but we have had to go through celebrations like Christmas, his birthday and our wedding anniversary alone and coping with situations like that is awful. We miss him so much every day."
Anyone with any information is being urged to contact police on 0845 113 5000.
