Don't judge a kitten by its colour, warns West Midlands RSPCA branch as overlooked cats wait for homes

A West Midlands branch of animal rescue charity RSPCA has urged adopters not to hold out on preferences based on looks.

A West Midlands RSPCA branch has urged potential adopters not to hold out on rehoming a cat because they’re waiting for a specific appearance.

The Worcestershire branch sent the message on social media as they have several kittens waiting for homes who are being ‘overlooked’ due to people waiting for a pets with a particular colour of fur or distinctive markings.

Instead, the charity claims to match new owners based on personality rather than appearance.

In the post, which has recieved more than 11,000 likes and 1,000 comments, the animal charity said: “We've recently received quite a few applications asking for specific colours or markings of kittens.

“While we completely understand that people have preferences, it can unfortunately mean that some kittens are left waiting much longer for homes, with adopters choosing to wait for a particular look rather than considering the kittens currently available.

“The truth is, kittens don't know they're supposed to be a certain colour to be popular. They all seem equally convinced that they deserve to climb your curtains, steal your seat, and wake you up at 5am for breakfast.

“When you apply to adopt from us, we'd love the focus to be on finding the right match based on personality, temperament, and lifestyle. The kitten that's perfect for your family may not be the one you initially pictured.

“Every kitten deserves the same chance of a loving home, and each one has their own unique character, quirks, and charm. If you're thinking about adopting, please keep an open mind and let us help match you with a kitten whose personality is the best fit for you.

“After all, ten years from now you won't be talking about the colour of your cat's fur - you'll be telling stories about the little menace who stole your socks, supervised every trip to the bathroom, and somehow became your best friend.”

Many animal lovers took to the comments in agreement with the post, with one writing: “You shouldn’t be allowed cats if you only want a certain breed/type for the way they look. If they don’t aesthetically match your lounge maybe you should get a furry pillow.”

Another said: “I couldn’t agree more,” while a third wrote: “We've had 3 black cats. I don't understand colour preference. They aren’t accessories.”
