An investigation has been launched by West Midlands Police after the cash machine and combined telephone box was set ablaze.

Police and firefighters were called to Dudley Road on the Birmingham/Sandwell border at around 3.45am today.

When they arrived they found the booth containing the machine and a public telephone well alight and two fire crews brought it under control.

They then used heavy duty cutting equipment to break into the machine to make electronic components safe.

West Midlands Police said: "We consider it to be a suspicious incident and officers have launched an investigation."

Witnesses should contact 101 or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
