Detectives investigating the murder of Tettenhall pensioner Hester Mottershead today revealed the burglars who raided her home may have travelled up to 100 miles to commit the crime.

Officers are investigating strong links in the East Midlands.

They also revealed today that the three men who barged their way into the former headteacher's home in Saxonfields may have escaped in more than one car.

Miss Mottershead, who was head of Wolverhampton Girls High and known to her friends as Estella, answered her door to three men posing as water board officials on August 17.

They barged past and spent half an hour going through drawers and cupboards before escaping.

Police arrived shortly afterwards and found Miss Mottershead suffering what is believed to be a stroke. She died the following morning.

DCI Caroline Marsh is urging residents in the area to check their hedgerows and gardens for any discarded clothing or items which may have been stolen from the house.
