Walsall-based castings and engineering group Chamberlin has announced a major new £3 million contract as it revealed sales so far this year are better than expected.

The company, which recently opened a new machining site in the town to cope with growing orders, said the latest order was for an unnamed European firm making parts for the automotive industry.

The announcement came at the company's annual shareholder meeting, when chairman Keith Butler-Wheelhouse told investors Chamberlin had made 'a good start' to its new financial year, with sales in the first three months 'slightly ahead of management expectations'.

At the same time he warned that the company's costs in the first half of the year would reflect additional spending at the new machining centre, on the Bloxwich Lane industrial estate, to support an increase in the amount of work it was handling.

Mr Butler-Wheelhouse added: “I am also pleased to highlight a major new contract signed by our foundry operation in the period with an existing customer, a leading European supplier of components and parts to the automotive industry.

"Worth €3.7 million (£3.28m) over its seven year term, the contract commences towards the end of 2019 and will replace an existing programme at Walsall for the same customer, which is coming to the end of its life cycle.

"The award underlines our technical expertise and high service standards as well as our strong customer relationships."
