More than 15,000 drivers were issued tickets after being clocked by speed cameras in 2018 - a rise of 101 per cent from 2017.

West Midlands Police logged a total of 15,005 speeding tickets in 2018, all of which were paid by drivers.

However speed cameras flashed a total of 53,278 times last year, meaning a large amount of offences went unpunished.

And 4,928 court actions were brought about while 21,739 drivers were retrained. There were also 27 incomplete and 11,579 cancelled fines.

The number of completed tickets in 2018 was still fewer than 2011 - which was 20,228.

The figures were provided by the Home office.

The statistics also show that, in Staffordshire, a total of 14,828 motorists were issued with fines after being clocked on speed cameras.

This represented a 16 per cent rise from 2017.

In contrast to the West Midlands, this tally in Staffordshire represented a large rise from 2011, when the tally was 10,061.

Samuel Nahk, senior public affairs officer at charity Brake, said: "Breaking the speed limit by any amount can have devastating consequences, and drivers who selfishly ignore speed limits put not only themselves, but other road users, at serious risk.
