Thieves tried to steal the safe after disabling the alarm system in the building on Birmingham New Road. But their efforts were unsuccessful and they instead escaped with money from the tins in aid of Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Sarah Buxton, spokeswoman for West Midlands Police, said: "We were called to a burglary at McDonalds on Birmingham New Road, Coseley, at 5.45am.

"The restaurant was broken into via a window sometime between 12.30am and 5.30am on Sunday.

"The alarm system appeared to have been disabled and cash was stolen from charity tins, but an attempt to steal a safe on site was unsuccessful.

"Inquiries in the area are underway to establish if there is any CCTV which may prove useful to the investigation."

Ronald McDonald House Charities provides free 'home away from home' accommodation for families with children in hospital. It supports Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Anyone with information should call police on 101.
