Ex-West Brom boss Ossie Ardiles injured in Falkland Islands smash

Former West Bromwich Albion manager and Argentinian World Cup winner Ossie Ardiles has been injured in a car crash on the Falkland Islands.

Ardiles was on the island making a documentary about the Falklands War with ex-teammate Ricky Villa, and how it affected their careers.

The 61-year-old was airlifted to King Edward Memorial Hospital in Stanley, the capital of the Islands.

Ardiles was driving Villa and the television crew along the road from Darwin to Stanley when he saw a sheep on the road and swerved to avoid it, according to reports.

"Some of his crew were less seriously injured, but he suffered a head injury which was serious enough for an RAF search and rescue helicopter to come and pick him up and take him to the local hospital in Stanley," a witness said.

A nurse at the hospital said that he was 'fine' but that they were monitoring his condition.

Ardiles moved to Tottenham in 1978 from Argentine club Huracan just a few months after winning the World Cup with his country and spent 10 years at White Hart Lane.

He was boss at The Hawthorns during the 1992/3 season.

West Bromwich Albion also left a message wishing their former a swift recovery on Twitter today:
