A happy couple collected donations for the Poppy Appeal and Help for Heroes at an Armistice Day wedding.

David Palmer, aged 48, and Terri Mellor, 25, tied the knot at Sandwell Register Office in West Bromwich High Street yesterday.

The couple, who met eight years ago at the tattoo studio in Walsall where Mr Palmer was a tattoo artist, said they always wanted a winter wedding and thought the date 11-11-11 was special. Mr Palmer, 48, said: "We decided on this date because it is a once in a hundred year occurrence, it makes it very special."

The couple, of Sheridan Street in Wednesbury, hoped to have the wedding at 11am, but the register office was not available. Mr Palmer's best man's nephew Karl Hinett was seriously injured as a soldier in Iraq. The Express & Star local hero, aged 24, of Hall Lane, suffered 37 per cent burns during a tank attack but has vowed to run 100 marathons before the end of 2012.

Meanwhile, a baby born in the West Midlands on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 2011 has been named Poppy.

Poppy Wickson was born at Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield yesterday weighing a healthy 7lb 7oz.

Excited parents Claire and David Wickson had not thought of naming her after the flower that symbolises Armistice Day until friends pointed out the link.
