Peterborough sack manager Luke Williams after home defeat to Doncaster

Alfie May and Isaac Hutchinson were on target for Rovers to leave posh with just one league win this season.
Peterborough parted ways with manager Luke Williams following a 2-0 defeat to fellow strugglers Doncaster.
Alfie May opened the scoring for Rovers after 15 minutes before Isaac Hutchinson wrapped up the victory with two minutes remaining.
Posh have just one league win to their name this season and sit 23rd in the League One table, and a club statement read: “This is not a decision the club has taken lightly.
“However, the team’s form in Sky Bet League One has not matched the Board’s expectations, particularly given the significant investment made in the squad, and following today’s performance against Doncaster Rovers the Board felt it had no other choice but to make a change.”
Ryan Harley has been asked to take interim charge. After the defeat, he said: “The situation is very difficult. He’s been our leader for close to a year here, he’s got brilliant staff, a brilliant group of players and when these circumstances happen, for me it’s two things: Can the staff always do a little bit more? I think so. Can the players do more? Yes, it’s both.
“A very difficult situation. Someone’s now leaving their job, that’s never nice in any industry, especially football because it’s what we know.
“He’s a brilliant manager, a brilliant coach. I’ve never seen anyone coach like him is my honest opinion, and I’ve seen a lot of coaches. But, as we know, it’s not quite worked recently for loads and loads of different reasons, so I get it but it’s difficult.
“The game itself, we played well in spells but we didn’t quite put our foot on the throttle. We didn’t quite create enough which has been a little bit recent, but what we can’t do even when we’ve got the flow of the game, we can’t give the game to them and let them have anything, because it’s just a waste of 20 minutes and we just got a bit emotional.”
Doncaster manager Grant McCann hailed his side’s “perfect away performance” as they claimed their first win of the season,
“I thought it was a good away performance,” said McCann. “We defended really well, looked strong from a defensive point of view against a talented front four from Peterborough.
“To limit them to no shots on our goal, Tommy hasn’t had a save to make, maybe some shots from distance that flew over the bar, but we never felt really in any danger.
“We defended mostly everything that they threw at us and then we scored two really good goals. The first one’s an excellent goal, good bit of play, great run from Leon and a lovely weight of pass to find Alfie.
“The second one, again, a lovely bit of play from Jordan and to find Hutchinson and another goal, so perfect away performance, clean sheet, three points, couldn’t have asked for much more.
“We just want to take a bit of pressure off the back line, and by doing that you score goals and the defenders defend a bit better and you’ve got something to hold on to.
“That was the remit today, the remit was that we’ve got a bit of a break after this, we don’t have a game for three weeks so it was important that we send our fans home happy.”
