Emiliano Mondonico dies aged 71
Mondonico had spells at Torino, Fiorentina, Atalanta and Napoli.
Torino led the tributes to former coach Emiliano Mondonico, who has died aged 71 after a long battle with cancer.
Mondonico played for Torino early in his career before going on to manage them between 1990-94 – guiding them to the 1992 UEFA Cup final – and again in 2000. He also played for Monza and Atalanta and book-ended his playing days with two spells at Cremonese.
The former winger also managed Fiorentina, Atalanta and Napoli before finishing his career in 2012 after he was sacked by Novara.
In an official statement on their official website, Torino said: “President Urbano Cairo and all the Torino Football Club – managers, employees, coaches, football players, youth sector – are deeply saddened and express heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Emiliano Mondonico.
“A Former Granata player and then Toro coach with whom he won an Italian Cup and the Mitropa Cup, Emiliano Mondonico has entered the history of our club and the heart of all the fans.”
Atalanta also paid tribute, saying: “In moments like this you always find it hard to find words, perhaps because there are none. An important piece of Atalantine history has gone, but it will never be forgotten.”
