Manager and Dean Smith and chairman Jeff Bonser pushed the boat out to land his signature in the summer on a one-year deal with a further year's option.

But he has been replaced by highly-rated 18-year-old striker Jordy Hiwula, who arrives initially on a one-month youth loan from Premier League champions Manchester City.

Manset, aged 25, joined the club in August and has figured in 24 games this term but most of his games came as a substitute.

Hs only goal earning a 1-0 Johnstone's Paint Trophy win at Rochdale that began the club's journey to their first Wembley final.

Smith said: "Unfortunately things did not go as well as we were hoping. A lot of that is to do with the excellent form of Tom Bradshaw.

"Mathieu has displayed a good attitude during his time with us but, at this stage of his career, he needs to be playing regular first-team football, and we can't offer him that here."

Hiwula has been a regular scorer for City youth teams in recent years. The Manchester-born forward has been capped by England at Under-18 and 19 level and had a spell on loan at Yeovil earlier this season.
