Wolves’ FA Cup colours hinge on the flip of a coin

A coin toss is taking place later this week to decide whether Wolves or Watford will wear their home kit for the FA Cup semi-final.

The flip of the coin will happen at a meeting of club officials, in which a number of issues will be discussed, ahead of the big game at Wembley on Sunday, April 7.

And the supporters who believe in superstition will be hoping Wolves win it, and are able to don gold and black at the national stadium.

That is because, in their white away strip, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are winless this campaign.

They have played five times in the all-white kit and drawn 1-1 with Bournemouth, 2-2 with Shrewsbury and 1-1 with Manchester United, and lost 2-1 to Cardiff and 2-0 to Leicester.

But it is also worth noting the Hornets won 2-0 wearing their green away strip at Molineux in October, so Wolves will have to end one of those trends in order to go a step closer to their Cup dream.

Another win at Wembley would add to an already healthy record there.

They have won their last six games at the ground – FA Cup finals in 1949 and 1960, League Cup finals in 1974 and 1980, the Sherpa Van Trophy in 1988 and a Premier League game against Tottenham in December.

Also, fears of potential suspensions for the final due to the two-booking rule have been allayed.

The FA brought in an automatic one-game ban this season for players who had picked up two yellow cards in the competition – and concerns over its fairness have been raised since.

Conor Coady, Willy Boly and Ruben Neves were each cautioned against Manchester United at the weekend, while Joao Moutinho and Morgan Gibbs-White were shown yellows against Bristol City in the fifth round.

But another booking for any of those players would not see them banned for the final in the event of beating Javi Gracia’s Watford.

That is due to yellow cards being wiped after the quarter-finals.
