Paul Ince rarely needed an excuse for a scrap.

And the Wolves captain certainly wasn't backing down when he went head to head with ex-Liverpool team mate Steven Gerrard.

Tempers flared between the two legendary England skippers in a tempestuous encounter in January 2004.

Wolves, fresh from a famous 1-0 victory over Manchester United, were fighting for their Premier League lives when the Reds visited Molineux four days later.

And Ince took the mentality literally when he and Gerrard whipped out their handbags in the dying minutes.

Wolves were 1-0 down when Gerrard took offence to Ince trying to claim a penalty.

The pair squared up and had to be separated, with Dietmar Hamann, Kenny Miller and Jerzy Dudek playing peacemakers.

After a talking-to from the referee for the two midfielders, Wolves striker Vio Ganea lunged into an ugly tackle on Gerrard to stoke the fires further.

And if Wolves' plan was to rile Liverpool it certainly worked.

Miller, the match-winner against United, stroked home a Denis Irwin cross and Wolves earned a dramatic last-gasp point.

Reds boss Gerard Houllier admitted his players' emotions had got the better of them.

As for Ince and Gerrard, they soon made up.

Gerrard said after the game: "I thought Paul Ince was trying to get a penalty when it wasn't. That's just one of those things which happens in a game and it's forgotten about now so far as I'm concerned.

"We swapped shirts at the end so there's no problem."

Wolves defender Paul Butler added: "It was just handbags with Incey and Gerrard.

"They're good mates. Incey just tries to get everyone going - players and crowd - and it worked in the end."
