Odds for 57 attackers to win Championship golden boot - with a telling West Brom omission

Eyes have not been on The Hawthorns for the latest stakes in who will win the 2026/27 Championship golden boot gong.

An email from a betting firm dropped in my inbox this week for the latest Championship top goalscorer odds for 2026/27.

Nothing untoward there. I scanned the list looking for - but in truth expecting very little - Albion interest.

There was one name from a list of, I counted them, 57 Championship attacking players. From unsurprising the 6/1 favourite, West Ham skipper Jarrod Bowen, to the distant outsiders at 150/1 - which even featured Callum Robinson at newly-promoted Cardiff.

A missing name that struck me? Jimmy-Jay Morgan.

Now, first of all, in Betfair’s defence Morgan is totally new to Championship football and the punters whose flutters help shape the odds probably have not had too keen an eye on summer events at The Hawthorns.

There is also no getting carried away here. I’m not backing Morgan to come out on top in the Championship golden boot stakes, above seasoned hitmen like Bowen, Raul Jimenez, Tino Castellanos, Zan Vipotnik, Zian Fleming or even Adam Armstrong.

But it is that kind of under-the-radar approach that may lead to Morgan, the £1.2million summer recruit from Chelsea, to surprise a few in navy blue and white stripes.

Third-favourite at 10/1 Will Lankshear, of Middlesbrough, has 13 career goals to Morgan’s 14.

One Baggies man features among the 57 - Aune Heggebo.

The Norwegian, 10 goal top scorer last season with nine in the league, can be yours for odds of 66/1.

For Morgan not to feature among a bloated collection of Championship forwards and attacking midfielders was an eyebrow-raiser to me.

The 20-year-old has four goals in three friendlies so far - against sides from lower levels, admittedly - but he has shown top finishing qualities are there.

Reports from Baggies pre-season training were that his ability in front of goal had made its mark.

There is more to Morgan’s game, too. He might not be a centre-forward that plays on the shoulder and has shown he likes to drop deep and link play.

Morgan is very much an outsider for an award like this, but he has been brought in to find the net for Albion, and the early signs are very bright.

Fourteen goals on loan at an average Peterborough side in League One should be another tell-tale sign that this youngster is no rabbit in the headlights in front of goal.

Overlooking Morgan, and more broadly Albion, for such a prize feels like a theme heading into the new season.

Last season’s paltry tally of 48 goals in 46 league games shows why, but boss James Morrison has referenced the upturn needed - and Morgan is among those responsible.

Whatever odds you can find him at the foot of any list, Morgan may just land you a few quid next May.
