Matt Phillips vows to wow the West Brom crowd and repay Tony Pulis

New signing Matt Phillips has promised to repay boss Tony Pulis for his 18-month pursuit by getting the West Brom fans on their feet.

The 25-year-old winger finally joined the Baggies today on a four-year deal after completing a £5m move from Queens Park Rangers.

Pulis was criticised last season by some supporters for a style of play that was perceived to be too unadventurous.

Phillips knows he's been brought to the Black Country to inject some much-needed excitement into the side.

Asked if his job was to entertain the fans, the Aylesbury-born speed merchant said: "Definitely, that's part and parcel of my game. I carry the ball and I'm an attacking player.

"I like to beat a man, get crosses in the box. I still feel I need to add more goals but I'm here to learn. Hopefully I can do that here and really push on."

He knows the supporters will be pinning their hopes on him going forward but the winger is also keenly aware of his defensive duties under Pulis.

"On the other side of it I know how the manager plays and I know he's going to want me to defend as well," he admitted.

"It will be tough but I can't wait to get going and get in amongst it."

Pulis has wanted to bring Phillips to the club ever since he took over the reins, but he was unable to sign the Scotland international last summer.

"It's nice to have a manager and a club that have tracked you for 18 months," said Albion's new winger.

"They showed a lot of faith to continue to want me here and that says a lot.

"All I can do is look to repay the manager and the club for continuing the interest and hopefully hit the ground running."

Albion were interested in Phillips last summer, but he was even more eager to join this year after speaking to one of his QPR team-mates.

"Sandro was here for the last six months of last season and he speaks very highly of the club so I just couldn't wait to get it done," said Phillips.

"As soon as I heard about the interest from the club, I had a year left on my contract at QPR so I thought now would be the right time and thankfully we're here.

""I wanted to get back in the Premier League and I've heard great things about the manager."

Phillips hasn't spoken to Pulis yet but is due to meet him tomorrow before the whole squad fly out to Austria for their gruelling pre-season fitness camp.

He did meet goalkeeper Ben Foster at the training ground today, but he already knows quite a few people in the Albion dressing room.
