Malky Mackay back in West Brom frame after Cardiff sacking

Malky Mackay today emerged as the hot favourite for the Albion job after being sacked by Cardiff.

The Scot was dismissed by Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan this afternoon, just days after Tan said he would be in charge for the "foreseeable future".

But he has finally acted after yesterday's 3-0 home defeat to Southampton, which left Cardiff 16th in the Premier League.

Mackay was expected to leave the Cardiff City Stadium at the weekend – with Tan reportedly jetting in to sack him after the 3-1 loss at Liverpool.

It came after Tan issued Mackay an ultimatum of resign or be sacked in an email where he criticised his management, transfer dealings and style of play.

It sparked protests from Cardiff fans against the controversial Tan, who also sacked Mackay's trusted lieutenant and head of recruitment Iain Moody in October.

The Hawthorns hierarchy had been keeping tabs on the situation in south Wales and could move now Mackay is available.

Mackay is 11/10 joint favourite with Pepe Mel on Skybet while BetVictor have the ex-Norwich and West Ham defender at 4/5 to succeed Steve Clarke.

Caretaker head coach Keith Downing is due to take charge of tomorrow's trip to West Ham after Boxing Day's 1-1 draw at Tottenham.
