Gary Megson promised to behave himself before his Hawthorns return, but there were times on Saturday when the touchline firebrand couldn’t help himself.

Two peas in a pod - Gary Megson and Tony Pulis at The Hawthorns

Standing shoulder to shoulder with Tony Pulis at the edge of the technical area, the new assistant was almost barking as many orders at the players as the head coach.

It was a familiar sight that warmed the hearts of many fans, and one that Pulis was also pleased to see.

The head coach has brought Megson back to the club following the retirement of Dave Kemp.

Although Pulis’s long-term assistant was more reserved on the touchline, Pulis is happy with Megson’s enthusiastic approach.

“Meggy has been good,” he said. “He is different to Dave in lots of respects.

“He is enthusiastic. Kempy is a little bit older and more reserved, although he looks a lot younger than Meggy does!”

But there are plenty of similarities between the two, and Pulis is pleased that Megson – like Kemp – is willing to speak up.

“Kempy was absolutely wonderful in knowing me and knowing what I was feeling and knowing what I needed,” said Pulis.

“I have spoken to Gary at length about what we need to do together as a team and that’s what it is: winning together as a team.

"He will be exactly like Kempy. He will say what he thinks at times and that’s what I love.”
