VAR not to be used in this season's Championship Play-Off final

Video assistant referees will not be used in the Championship play-off final despite an estimated £180million windfall for the winners in guaranteed broadcast income and parachute payments.

It is understood the decision has been taken because VAR has not been in use in league competition, though the technology has been deployed on a trial basis in the Carabao Cup.

Goal-line technology will be in operation for the match on May 27 at Wembley.

Confirmation of the EFL’s stance comes after another weekend of controversy related to refereeing errors, most notably when Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta equalised against Cardiff despite being offside.
