Lawley boys at the double

The non-league action may have been brought to a premature end, but Dudley Town have honoured their stars of the season.

The Robins enjoyed their most successful campaign in a number of years under the astute guidance of boss Matty Lovatt.

They were sitting third in the standings and on course to fill one of the four promotion slots when the West Midlands League Premier Division was declared null and void due to the coronavirus pandemic.

And club chiefs were keen to sign off with some sort of celebration as they opted to go ahead with their end of season awards via Twitter.

The Lawley brothers saw their efforts recognised with skipper Mitch picking up the manager’s player of the year accolade, while Ben walked away with the supporters’ player of the year award.

Todd Perry was voted players’ player and striker Lewis Taylor-Boyce bagged the top goalscorer gong.

Jay Hewitt’s stunning strike in the derby victory against Dudley Sports was voted goal of the season, while kitman Phil Moss picked up the clubman of the year award.

“It was a good season, and having finished 10th the year before I think we did remarkably well, especially considering we a relatively low budget,” said boss Matty Lovatt.

“And I am happy that we made the awards. I know this will always be classed as ‘the season that never was’ but it’s important to still recognise the effort everyone put in last season.

“And it was nice to see the players who picked up awards rewarded.”
