No timescale on Jack Grealish return after injury leaves Villa medical team "scratching their heads"

Dean Smith has revealed there is currently no timescale on Jack Grealish’s return after admitting the playmaker’s shin injury has left Villa’s medical staff “scratching their heads.”

The 23-year-old is currently wearing a protective boot and risks missing the entire festive programme.

Grealish is being assessed day-to-day but is definitely out of Sunday’s showdown with Championship leaders Leeds and boss Smith conceded Villa are yet to nail down the exact problem.

“Jack has got the medical staff a bit discombobulated,” he said. That’s my word for the day, I heard it on a college football game.

“He’s got them all a little bit confused. He’s got a protective boot on it because we need to progress with caution. We’re not sure if it’s a bone stress injury or the soleus muscle.

“It’s one we’re looking at at the moment and we’re taking it day-by-day.”

He continued: “Hopefully it won’t take him too long and we can have him back soon because he’s a top player in this league.

“All those kicks take their toll on a young player like him.”

Smith will at least welcome back midfielder Birkir Bjarnason, with the midfielder set to return after two months out with a shin injury.

Winger Albert Adomah is expected to train on Saturday, along with Mile Jedinak, though Henri Lansbury (hamstring) remains sidelined.
