Former England international and Aston Villa assistant boss Ray Wilkins dies aged 61

Former Aston Villa assistant manager Ray Wilkins has passed away, aged 61.

The former Chelsea, Manchester United and QPR midfielder was assistant to Tim Sherwood at Villa Park during his tenure as boss, leaving in October 2015.

He was admitted to hospital last week after suffering a cardiac arrest, and was placed in an induced coma at St. George's Hospital in London.

He leaves behind his wife and two children.

The ex-England international won 84 caps for England, featuring in the European Championships and World Cup.

The football personality was well-known for appearing as a pundit on television and radio over recent years.

Wilkins - known in the game by his childhood nickname 'Butch' - played for 11 clubs and was on the coaching staff of several more, but is commonly associated with Chelsea.

A statement from Chelsea read: "Everybody associated with Chelsea Football Club is devastated to learn of the passing of our former player, captain and assistant coach, Ray Wilkins. Rest in peace, Ray, you will be dreadfully missed."

The midfielder started his career there and spent six years with the Blues, while also having numerous stints as assistant manager. On one occasion, he led the side on a caretaker basis.

Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish tweeted his respects to Wilkins.

"So upset to hear the news of Ray Wilkins. RIP Ray." he said.

"Even when Ray left villa, he was always ringing me offering advice and telling me what I could do to improve. A true gentleman and one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met."

Lee Hendrie also paid his respect to the ex-Villa assistant.

"So sad to hear the news about a true gentleman and unreal footballer in Ray Wilkins R.I.P." he tweeted.

Stan Collymore, Ian Taylor, Paul Merson and Peter Withe also paid tribute to the footballing legend.

A statement was issued by St George's Hospital, on behalf of Ray Wilkins' family confirming the news.

"It is with great sadness we announce that Raymond Colin Wilkins passed away this morning.

"We would like to thank St George's staff for the amazing work they have done to care for our beloved Ray.

"We would also like to say thank you for the many goodwill messages we have received from Ray's friends, colleagues, and members of the public.

"Ray leaves behind his loving wife, Jackie, daughter Jade, son Ross, and his beautiful grandchildren, Oliver, Frankie, Ava, Freddie, Jake and Archie.

"We are asking for privacy at this very difficult time."
