John Terry’s Aston Villa shirt takes pride of place for Jack Marriot

Peterborough striker Jack Marriott revealed how John Terry’s Villa shirt will be taking pride of place on his wall after knocking his hero out of the FA Cup.

Marriott scored twice as the Posh came from behind to win 3-1 in Saturday’s third round tie at Villa Park.

The 25-year-old, a Chelsea fan, later described the experience of coming up against the Stamford Bridge legend as “surreal”.

And he revealed how he was able to get hold of the Villa skipper's shirt after the game to remember the occasion.

“I got his shirt afterward. Thankfully, I asked him coming off at half-time (when Villa were winning) so he was in a better mood,” said Marriott.

“Will it be going up on my wall? 100 per cent.

“It was surreal. Even in the warm-up, just seeing him.

“His experience is second to none. You can just tell, he has that class at centre-half, even though he was been out with injury.

“You would think, I am going to win it here and then the ball would be gone.”

Terry might be the big name but on Saturday it was Marriott who helped Posh make the headlines.

The double took his tally for the season up to 25 in all competitions and Villa are among a number of clubs who have tracked his progress, though the £5million asking price leaves him some way out of their price range.

Marriott is determined not to allow the speculation to affect his performance.

“Of course you hear about it. You get a bit of banter about it. But you literally have to try and brush it off,” he said.

“It is one of those that if I think too much about it I am not thinking about my game. If I don’t think about my game, the speculation isn’t there.”

Peterborough boss Grant McCann added: “In my personal opinion. I think Jack’s way above this league in League One.

“He could easily play in the Championship and maybe higher. He’ll score goals because of his pace and his goals.

“I hope we keep him. We have to fight tooth and nail to keep him.

“On the other hand I realise we’re Peterborough United not Manchester United so we have to cut our cloth accordingly.”
