One game at a time for Wednesfield's John Griffiths

Wednesfield joint-boss John Griffiths is staying ‘realistic’ about their promotion hopes, despite earning a seventh straight win in the West Midlands League Premier Division.

The Cottagers sit 10th in the league after a 4-1 win at home to Shawbury United and Griffiths was pleased with his side’s second-half performance.

“In the second half, we really turned the screw and we could have scored five or six,” he said.

“We looked lethargic in the first half and they had a young team that wanted to get in our faces.

“We weren’t clinical enough with our chances and then they scored on half-time, and all of a sudden we had a game on our hands.”

With games in hand over the clubs above them, Wednesfield have a shot at the top four this season.

First they must face ninth-placed Darlaston Town tonight and the boss isn’t getting ahead of himself.

“We’re just taking it one game at a time,” he said. “The players are focusing on that and as management we look at the fixtures and the table.

“The next two games will be really tough. Darlaston are a well run club and team. We beat them 1-0 last time, but it was tough – it’ll be a battle. They are quite a physical team, but I think we have the edge in terms of quality.

“We’re top of the form table, but we could lose the next one or two games and be out of it.

“We’re realistic. The opportunity is there, but there’s a lot of good teams around us in the league.”

Elsewhere in the league, Darlaston lost 2-0 away at Bewdley, Black Country Rangers beat Dudley Sports 2-1, Bilston Town were beaten 3-0 at Shifnal, Wolves Sporting slipped to 2-0 reverse at home to Littleton and Cradley went down 5-3 at Worcester Raiders.

Tonight’s fixtures: Darlaston Town v Wednesfield; Dudley Sports v Shawbury; Pershore Town v Wolves Casuals; Wolves Sporting v Dudley Town.
