Midlanders, sick of holiday data shockers? This digital SIM is your secret weapon, with a 1GB lifeline from Holafly to rescue your travel plans when disaster strikes.
Touch down abroad and your phone has no data. Sound familiar? For Midlanders heading off on holiday, getting a connection that actually works can quickly become the first priority — not sightseeing.
That is because your handset is often the one thing you need straight away. It helps you find the hotel, contact the transfer firm, translate a menu or prove you really did book the hire car months ago.
Finding yourself without mobile data can be a real headache. Don’t get caught out: airport Wi-Fi is not always dependable, public networks can be insecure and turning on standard roaming without checking the cost can leave you with an ugly bill later.
One answer is a travel eSIM, a digital replacement for the plastic SIM card in your phone. If your device is compatible, Holafly lets you install an eSIM before you travel and switch it on when you arrive.

The company now covers more than 200 destinations, including individual countries, wider regions and multi-country trips. That makes it useful for cruises and road trips. It can also help on longer holidays where several borders are involved.
Its newest feature is called Always On, and it is designed as a safety net. Once a Holafly eSIM has been installed, it provides 1GB of backup data every month in more than 150 supported destinations. The allowance refreshes every 30 days and does not require the traveller to reinstall the eSIM or buy a new package.
That is not enough for hours of streaming, but it could come in handy if a flight is cancelled, your paid plan runs out or an unexpected stopover leaves you somewhere you had not planned to be. Holafly says the 1GB should be enough to open maps, send WhatsApp messages, check emails, order a taxi or sort out another data plan.
The backup data does not roll over, but it does refresh each month. Holafly says Always On is included with its travel eSIMs, including short-trip unlimited-data products and its longer-term monthly plans.
For the main part of a holiday, many of Holafly’s destination plans offer unlimited data. They are aimed at travellers who do not want to count every megabyte while navigating, uploading photographs, making internet calls or keeping up with home.
The price is shown before purchase, with no unexpected roaming bill from Holafly afterwards. As with any unlimited mobile service, local network availability, speeds and fair-usage policies can vary, so it is worth checking the plan for your destination.
Installation can be done with a QR code or manual instructions. People with a compatible iPhone running iOS 17.4 or later may also be able to use a one-tap installation option.
The eSIM is delivered digitally by email or WhatsApp, so there is no need to hunt for a phone shop or deal with a tiny plastic SIM card at the airport.
Importantly, using a travel eSIM does not mean giving up your normal number. Your usual SIM can stay in the phone, allowing WhatsApp to keep working with the same account, while Holafly handles the data.
Travellers should, however, make sure data roaming is switched off on their regular UK SIM, otherwise it could still connect abroad and trigger charges from the usual network.
Holafly has also updated its mobile app, where travellers can check compatibility, install and manage eSIMs and monitor their plan. Human customer support is available around the clock through WhatsApp and website chat if anything goes wrong.
There are 11 regional options covering Europe, Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, the Middle East, North America, Oceania, Eastern Europe and the Balkans, alongside a Global eSIM.
An eSIM will not suit every phone or every traveller. Some older handsets do not support the technology, and people who use very little data may find a small roaming allowance from their existing network is enough.
But for anyone who relies heavily on their phone abroad, sorting an eSIM before departure could remove one of the most irritating parts of landing in a new country. That small reserve of emergency data could spare you holiday data hell when a journey does not go to plan.
