Wolves hit by more injury woe with defender facing two months out

The left-back is the latest player to suffer a knee injury.

Wolves have seen their bad luck with knee injuries continue after it emerged defender Ghislain Konan faces around two months out.

The left-back damaged his medial collateral ligament (MCL) during a training session at Compton Park late last week.

Konan was absent from the squad for Saturday’s 1-0 win over Watford, with boss Cesar Peixoto later explaining he was due to undergo a scan.

That has now confirmed the extent of the issue. The 30-year-old will not require surgery but will require eight weeks on the sidelines for the problem to heal.

Konan had made just three appearances since joining Wolves as a free agent last month.

But the Ivory Coast international had recently made his first Championship start in a 2-1 win at Burnley and his enforced absence means Hugo Bueno is the only recognised left-back available to Peixoto.

Wolves have suffered rotten luck with knee injuries and in particular MCL issues in the early months of the season.

Konan is the fourth summer signing to be sidelined. Striker Raul Jimenez has undergone surgery on his injury and is not expected back until January, while both Kieran Trippier and Rafiki Said have spent time out of the squad.

Peixoto hopes to have playmaker Fer Lopez back for Saturday’s visit of Cardiff City, along with centre-back Nasser Djiga.

Lopez complained of pain in his calf prior to the visit of Watford and while he was named on the bench, was not risked. Djiga was not involved at all due to a groin problem, though it was not believed to be serious.

Rodrigo Gomes is also progressing on his return from an ankle injury, while both Bertrand Traore and Boubacar Traore are battling hamstring issues.

Players are due to return to Compton on Tuesday to begin preparations for Cardiff’s visit, with the boss having granted his squad two days off to rest and recover following the Watford win, which was their fifth match in a fortnight since the international break.

The gap between matches is the longest Wolves have had, outside of the international window, since the build up to last month’s win at Sheffield United.
