Tributes paid to former mayor of Walsall, who died aged 76

‘She served her community with kindness, loyalty and respect,’ says present mayor

Tributes have been paid to a former mayor of Walsall, who has died aged 76.

Having lived in Walsall for many decades, Mrs Burley was first elected as Labour member for Pheasey in 1995, and represented the ward until 2003.

After a short break, she returned as a councillor for Bentley and Darlaston North in 2010 and was elected mayor in 2021.

During her municipal year, she supported the Phoenix French Bull Dog Rescue, Alzheimer’s Society and Walsall Foster Carers Association where she raised funds for these charities as part of the mayor’s appeal.

She was fiercely proud of her Maltese heritage.

The Mayor of Walsall, Councillor Alan Fleming spoke of his sadness at Mrs Burley’s passing.

“She dedicated many years of her life to public service and was honoured to share the many activities and events with the people in our borough during her time as mayor from 2021-2022,” he said.

“She served her community with kindness, loyalty and respect and was valued by everyone who knew her.

“On behalf of Walsall Council and the entire borough, I extend our deepest condolences to Rose’s family, friends and former colleagues at this time.”
