A government source with direct knowledge confirmed Sirhan was the victim.

Officials had confirmed an inmate was taken to a hospital on Friday but did not name Sirhan.

Mr Callison did not identify the wounded inmate.

Mr Kennedy, the brother of assassinated US president John Fitzgerald Kennedy, was gunned down while seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination for the presidency.
