Demolition of an eyesore landmark in the heart of Walsall will finally start next month – paving the way for a multi-million pound town centre redevelopment, it emerged today.
Work to demolish The Overstrand will to start in the week beginning August 8 and is due to be completed by the end of September.
There have been long-standing calls for the former music venue and restaurant to be pulled down.
Once demolition is completed, the £21 million revamp of the Old Square Shopping Centre will be able to push ahead. The Overstrand once hosted rising stars including indie legends The Charlatans, who played their first gig there in 1988.
It opened in the 1960s but has been boarded up for almost 15 years. There have been continued calls for it to be demolished until a formal planning bid was put forward earlier this year.
