Express & Star Comment: Councils must keep roads safe

The fund to tackle potholes across the region is to be welcomed.

Crumbling roads are causing a hole-heap of trouble for motorists

Crumbling roads continue without fail to be a major problem for motorists.

They are a nuisance that councils have struggled to get a grip on for years.

But every winter the same old problems surface again and again.

Why do local authorities let this sorry state of affairs occur?

Motorists are hammered by taxes and soaring costs that boost the coffers of the State – yet when it comes to providing decent and safe roads they seem to be reluctant to splash the cash.

Potholes aren't just an inconvenience, they are dangerous.

They cause untold damage to cars and can even lead to accidents.

It is vitally important that councils take their responsibilities seriously.

They already face bills running into the thousands to cover repair costs.

Taxpayers' expectations are quite simple: collect the bins on time, grit the roads, and ensure our streets are safe to drive on.

That really should not be too much to ask.
