The candidates to become Mayor of the West Midlands all ramble on about how important manufacturing is to the prosperity of the region and how marvellous it is that Jaguar Land Rover is doing so well.

But when it comes to transport, nobody seems to have any thought for the poor struggling motorist other than forcing us all onto buses and trains and maybe nationalising the M6 toll road.

Now the bus companies have told MPs the time has come to put congestion charging back on the agenda. The pay-as-you-drive scheme, repeatedly rejected for this region, would help the campaign to make us abandon our cars.

This is, of course, the politically-correct policy to adopt. We must be very sure the Mayoral candidates do not support this plan to cripple motoring while simultaneously praising our car-making industry.
