The Duke of Edinburgh’s death at the age of 99 quickly prompted public tributes – even if large gatherings were prevented by coronavirus restrictions.

Flags were quickly lowered to half mast at royal residences including Buckingham Palace, Holyroodhouse and at Balmoral, the favoured summer holiday retreat for the royal family.

The sporting world also paid tribute with silences at cricket grounds and Aintree where Saturday’s Randox Grand National will take place, while Downing Street lowered flags and Piccadilly Circus featured Philip’s image on its giant screen.
