Primrose Bridge, on Cradley Road in Netherton, known locally as the Astle Bridge, is currently designated as a weak bridge with a 7.5-ton weight limit.

The repair work will increase the bridge load carrying capacity to 40 tons that it can safely carry heavy good vehicles and buses.

The bridge over Dudley Canal has been known as Astle Bridge since the words ‘Astle is King’ were daubed on it to mark West Brom striker Jeff Astle’s winning goal against Everton in the 1968 FA Cup final.

The original graffiti was cleaned off by the castle in the early 1990s but the bridge has since been painted on again several times.

The work is being funded with almost £1.9m from the Department of Transport and £300,000 from Dudley Council.

Councillor Karen Shakespeare, Dudley Council's cabinet member for highways, said: "I was delighted to receive the news that ministers had agreed we were to receive the maximum funding contribution from the Department for Transport as Primrose, or as it’s known locally ‘Astle’ bridge is held in great affection by residents.

"Being awarded this funding means we will be able to restore local pride and make these important repairs.

"By strengthening the bridge, we will make the route accessible for heavier vehicles and more importantly, buses, hopefully allowing more people to make better use of public transport and all the benefits that brings."

It forms part of the Department of Transport's £33m nationwide improvement programme which aims to improve the condition of local roads and infrastructure.

West Midlands Mayor Andy Street said: "The West Midlands is undergoing a transport revolution, and I am delighted that the Government continues to invest in and support our exciting plans."
