The event saw more than 100 youngsters converge on Rowley Park Stadium to compete in events from the 100 metre sprint to an egg and spoon race.

Wolves legend and Stafford Rangers manager Steve Bull was on hand to present prizes to winners of a football tournament, while Stafford Borough mayor Ann Edgeller also commended successful young athletes.

The Stafford Police Community Sports Day pitted six teams of 20 young people against each other yesterday. The competitors, aged between 10 and 16, were drawn from the Wildwood, Littleworth, Docey, North End, Rising Brook and Coton Fields areas of the town.

And while they fought it out on field and track, there was a variety of other entertainments on offer, including a skatepark, street dancing and cycle marking.

Denny Corbett, from Rising Brook South Tenants and Residents' Group, was there with a group of youngsters who came second in the overall rankings. She said: "The children of Rising Brook South and Silkmore would like to send a big thank you via your paper to all the organisers, especially our PCSO, for all their hard work.

"We all enjoyed the day and was thrilled to be runners-up. I hope this is not a one off."

The overall winners of the sports day were Doxey, while the football team winners were Wildwood and Baswich.
