Protest at closure of homes

Hundreds of protesters marched through the streets of Wolverhampton today in a bid to save four city care homes and a school from the axe.

Health workers, par-ents and school pupils blew whistles and banged drums during the rally, which travelled from the city's West Park to the Civic Centre.

The campaigners waved banners with slogans such as "people before profits" and "healthcare before wealth, Blair", and handed out leaflets to shoppers in the city centre.

The campaign was organised by Unison in a bid to fight for public services, which they claim are being stripped away.

Among the campaigners were workers from the city's only four remaining council-owned nursing homes - Dale House, Underhill House, Nelson Mandela House and Merry Hill House. They have been left fearing for their jobs after councillors put forward plans to shut two of the sites.

Supporters from Danesmore Park Primary School also joined in the rally in a bid to save the school.

Chairman of the school's Parent Teacher Association, Dawn Gambone, said:"By joining in this rally, we are showing that we will not take this lying down."
