Streetly Academy student Harry-James Kirkham, aged 15, died as a result of his injuries in March.

The teenager, from Kingstanding, was crossing Sutton New Road in Birmingham after leaving a church with friends when he was hit.

The officer in the car, an emergency response Pc based at Sutton Coldfield Police Station, was on routine patrol in the area and was not responding to an emergency call for service.

In the aftermath of his death his family, including parents Dawn Smith and Craig Kirkham, launched a successful £4,000 appeal towards a memorial headstone.

Dr Sandeep Walia, a consultant at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, told Birmingham Coroner's Court yesterday that the 15-year-old arrived with a 'catastrophic' injury to the brain and extensive facial fractures.

The inquest into Harry's death started at Birmingham Coroner's Court yesterday and is set to conclude today.
