Police cars were positioned at either end of the stretch of road and officers on foot were stopping approaching vehicles and asking motorists to divert away from the scene.

It was not clear if emergency services were dealing with a road accident or a police incident, but witnesses on social media reported seeing officers with dogs in the area and there was speculation that there had been a violent incident.

Motorist Jessica Pickett, 22, was among drivers forced to divert.

She said: "There were officers on foot turning people around. It wasn't clear if there had been an accident or if something else was happening, but there were several police cars there blocking the road and speaking to motorists."

Another witness, speaking on social media, said: "There were sniffer dogs there and they were going into the subway between Sainsbury's and the old Market Square.

"There was a large police presence and there were a few ambulance cars that have since left."

The incident on the Ring Road is less than a mile away from the scene of a fatal hit-and-run, which happened on Birmingham Road, near Johnson Street, Blakenhall, shortly after 10pm on Saturday. A woman was hit by a car which did not stop, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Two people have been arrested in connection with that crash.
