Wolverhampton Council agrees to write off 788 debts totalling £837,695 - including £512,621 in unpaid council tax

A West Midland council has agreed to write off debts totalling £837,695, including £512,621 in unpaid council tax.

Members of Wolverhampton Council's cabinet will this afternoon be told that the debt had been written off in its financial statement for the previous three months.

The report, by council chief executive Tim Johnson, said that although the debts would no longer be pursued, the council reserved the right to reinstate them should there be a change in circumstances.

Mr Johnson's report said the council had written off almost £14.6 million in unpaid council tax, business rates and sundry debts over the previous eight years, although the annual figures had fallen dramatically over that time.
